Goodbye AT&T and Hello T-Mobile Tuesday

Well after 10 years of loyal service to AT&T, I finally made the switch to T-Mobile.

I’m not the first and I’m sure I’m not the only person who’s considered switching cell phone providers.  I would bet many of your reading this have at least considered it for one reason or another.  Well here, I’ll break down why I switched and what the process was like.  Feel free to reach out to me with any questions you might have because it was far different of an experience than I thought it would be.

So this is a move I’ve been considering since the day I ordered the iPhone 7 on launch day (unlocked).  The unlocked part is important because it allows me to jump from carrier to carrier however often I’d like without a contract.

So I’ve been with AT&T for almost 10 years.  I’ve had a great customer experience and never had major issues with them.  It wasn’t until recently I started going over my data plan.  Honestly $15 for an extra Gigabyte of data to get me through the month doesn’t bother me at all.  A few months later they offered me a plan 1GB more than my original plan for just $5 more each month.  No brainer.

Except I didn’t read the find print because no one does… This meant after my data plan now instead of having an option to go to another 1GB at full LTE speeds for $15 I was stuck on 128kb per second data speeds which is slower than a messenger pigeon.

I’m not going to go into the nitty gritty of plan comparisons but T-Mobile and Verizon were now offering plans that offered 4x more data than I was getting on AT&T for the same price plus a ton of other attractive features.

So I said “Fuck it why not” and walked over to T-Mobile and made the switch.  Here is where it gets interesting.

To my disbelief it was so easy.  Having worked in Apple retail (selling iPhone plans at times) I was preparing myself for the worst.  When you know your current credentials (which lets be honest a lot do NOT) it becomes so easy!  I was set with my new plan with a ton of data for a great set price (Actually lower than what I was paying at AT&T) and my number had moved over to my current phone.

Being that my experience was so effortless the sales person at T-Mobile made me aware of some other services they offer as I’m sure they have to but I was done and out the door in less than 15 minutes.  I couldn’t believe how easy it was!

If you’re considering doing the same here are somethings I would check prior to going into  a store:

Knowing all of this ahead of time made it much easier than I ever would have imagined.  Now the real test.  Is the service as good as my service was with AT&T?  Good news is I can always switch back since I bought the iPhone unlocked.  Expect a follow up blog to this in a month or so and I’ll let you know how I feel about the service.  Until I’m really excited I made the switch.
